Fontana Spa: A Geothermal Retreat in Iceland’s Golden Circle

Located in south-west Iceland, the Fontana Spa is a geothermal gem nestled along the Golden Circle. Easily accessible by car from Reykjavík, this spa is a perfect stop for those exploring the iconic route, which includes Þingvellir National Park, Geysir geothermal area, and Gullfoss waterfall.

Facilities at Fontana Spa
Despite its modest size, Fontana Spa boasts a variety of unique features that promise a relaxing experience. The spa includes two pools and a hot tub, all geothermally heated and rich in minerals beneficial for the skin. There are also steam rooms built directly over geothermal vents, providing an immersive hot spring experience, and a Finnish-style sauna heated to 80 degrees Celsius.
The pools are situated at the edge of Lake Laugarvatn, offering serene views of the lake and the surrounding volcanic landscapes. The lake itself has geothermal activity, allowing visitors to feel warm currents around their feet when wading in from the spa.

Beyond the bathing facilities, Fontana Spa has an on-site restaurant serving traditional Icelandic meals made from fresh, local ingredients. There is also a bakery where bread and cakes are baked using geothermal heat, a process that involves burying dough in hot soil and letting nature do the rest.

The spa operates year-round, with adjusted hours during holidays. It is a particularly enchanting spot to visit in winter evenings, offering the chance to soak while watching the Northern Lights.

Comparing Fontana Spa and the Secret Lagoon
Fontana Spa is often compared to the Secret Lagoon, another popular geothermal pool near the Golden Circle. Both offer a more intimate and less commercial experience than the Blue Lagoon. However, while the Secret Lagoon features a geyser and a walk through a hot spring area, Fontana Spa stands out with its steam rooms and sauna. Fontana Spa is modern and sleek, whereas the Secret Lagoon retains a traditional and rustic charm.
Both spas provide unique experiences of Iceland’s geothermal wonders, ensuring relaxation and rejuvenation amidst stunning natural surroundings.
